The strategic goal of the IKBFU is to increase and secure competitiveness in the national and global markets of university education and R&D through developing competences in new areas and activities in line with the breakthrough achievements in the field of biomedical, neuro-, nanotechnology as well as in social sciences and the humanities. The University mission is to develop into a national leader in three interdisciplinary areas based on breakthrough achievements in biotechnologies and neurotechnologies; materials science and nanotechnology; information and communication technologies; to become a trendsetter in technology; to train internationally competitive professionals. There are several interdisciplinary priorities within the three major research areas: neurotechnologies; genetic engineering; marine microbiology; nanomaterials; applied engineering technologies; fundamental mathematics and informatics; information security. The three interdisciplinary areas make it possible to integrate all competitive areas developing at the IKBFU as a classical university. Innovative results have been achieved in these areas. History The Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University was established on October 13, 2010 by an order of the Chairman of the Government of the Russian Federation. A most innovative university, the Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University strives to maintain and spread academic and research traditions of its predecessor – the Albertina University of Königsberg. The Albertina, one of the oldest universities in Europe, has a 460-year history. I. Kant, J. Hamann, J. Herder, F.W. Bessel, K. Jacobi, F. Linderman, А. Gurvits, D. Hilbert and H. Helmholtz taught at the Albertina University. К. Donelaitis, the founder of Lithuanian literature, studied theology there. E.T.A. Hoffman, the famous writer and composer, attended lectures in philosophy at Albertina. The University's greatest professor is Immanuel Kant, the world-famous philosopher, who was a Russian citizen for some time. The name of I. Kant forever linked the city of Königsberg and the Albertina University with the global history of culture and became the ‘trademark’ of the region. The University The Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University is one of the largest centres of education, research and culture of the westernmost region of Russia. The University boasts the most sophisticated research equipment and infrastructure. FABRIKA Science and Technology Park FABRIKA Science and Technology Park houses the University hi-tech laboratories doing research in nano- and biotechnologies as well as in X-ray optics. Research laboratories: laboratory of new functional magnetic materials; laboratory coherent-optical measuring systems; laboratory of optical radiation; laboratory of applied and fundamental materials science; laboratory of intelligent robotics, energy efficiency centre laboratory of functional nanopowder and nanocarbon composite materials. IKBFU is one of the six new universities to have joined the 5-100 project IKBFU is one of the six new universities to have joined the 5-100 project. The overall goal of the project is for five Russian universities to feature in the international rankings’ top 100 by 2020. The University successfully presented its programme of academic excellence to the Council on Competitiveness Enhancement of Leading Russian Universities among Leading Global Research and Education Centers. The Council consists of prominent academics, public officials and international education experts, including Philip Altbach (Founder of the Center for International Higher Education in Boston), Michael Crow (President of Arizona State University), Edward Crawley (President of Skolkovo Institute of Science and Technology), Koenraad Debackere (Managing Director of the Catholic University of Leuven), Malcolm Grant (Chairman of NHS England), Tsui Lap-Chee (Vice-Chancellor and President of Hong Kong University), Min Weifang (Executive President of the Chinese Society for Education Development Strategies), Andrei Volkov (Professor, Moscow School of Management SKOLKOVO) and Igor Agamirzian (CEO of Russian Venture Company).
